Te ira o ia manapou | Genders of paramedics

This data represents paramedics who have identified a gender.

Gender refers to a person’s social and personal identity as male, female, or another gender or genders that may be non-binary. Gender may include gender identity and/or gender expression. A person’s current gender may differ from the sex recorded at their birth and may differ from what is indicated on their current legal documents. A person’s gender may change over time. Some people may not identify with any gender.

Te Kaunihera acknowledges that gender is a complex area, and paramedics can choose not to disclose this information to Te Kaunihera. A paramedic can update their recorded gender identity at any time by logging in to their MyPMC practitioner portal.

Te pakeke o ia manapou | Ages of paramedics

This data provides the ages of paramedics. When reviewing this data, please note that the 18 - 25 age range refers to those under (but not including) the age of 25.

When applying for registration, paramedics provide their date of birth to Te Kaunihera. This data can be used to provide insights on the workforce. Te Kaunihera records the ages of paramedics using the same data ranges as the Paramedicine Board of Australia, to enable easy comparison between the two jurisdictions.

Ngā Huarahi Rēhita | Pathway to registration

This data provides the pathways used by paramedics to gain registration with Te Kaunihera.

There are different ways in which a paramedic can be registered:

  • Completing a prescribed (approved) Aotearoa New Zealand qualification (PQ)
  • Applying for an assessment of their overseas qualification (ONPQ)
  • Mutual recognition of their Australian registration (TTMR)

When registration first opened, there were also two grandparenting pathways:

  • Recognition of an Authority to Practise with an approved employer (ATP)
  • An assessment of their Aotearoa New Zealand practise experience (EXP)

The two grandparenting pathways officially closed in Ākuhata | August 2021 for working paramedics, and in Mei | May 2022 for those who were not working, for example on parental or extended leave.
