About the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003
Te Kaunihera is a responsible authority set up under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (HPCA Act) to ensure that paramedics are competent and fit to practise their profession.
Among other things, the HPCA Act requires Te Kaunihera to:
- set the qualification criteria needed for becoming a paramedic
- set the standards of clinical competence, cultural competence and ethical conduct for paramedics
- register paramedics
- review and ensure the competence of paramedics.
